Solid Fuel FAQs
Owning a solid fuel burning appliance is exciting and satisfying, but it can also get a little bit complicated from time to time.
Whether you’re getting bogged down in the different types of fuel available for your appliance, or you need some clarification to help you choose the best fuel for your home then you’ve come to the right place. This FAQs page will cover some common questions regarding solid fuel fireplaces and the different fuels they burn. So if you’ve got a question, have a read through to see if it’s answered here.
Q: What fuel can I burn?
A: It depends on your appliance and whether or not you’re in a smoke control zone. For example, an open fire can burn coal or firewood unless you’re in a smoke control area. If you are, you can only burn smokeless fuels. Check your manufacturer’s guidelines to decide what types of fuel are best for your specific appliance.
Q: Can I burn coal and firewood together in my multi-fuel stove?
A: While it’s not recommended to burn coal and wood simultaneously, you can burn wood and smokeless coal together. Just make sure you have a multi-fuel flue liner installed – and in good condition.
Q: Am I in a smoke control zone?
A: Smoke control zones vary from county to county – they are determined by local councils, after all. The best way to find out is to get in touch with your local council and check your address with them. We have covered smoke control areas in more detail in another article.
Q: What smokeless fuels can I use?
A: Whether you’re in a smoke control zone or would just prefer to burn a more efficient solid fuel, there are plenty of smokeless alternatives to coal. We supply a range of Homefire smokeless coals, as well as natural anthracite. We also supply a range of smokeless boiler fuels.
Q: Should I have my chimney swept?
A: It’s recommended to have your chimney swept once a year to ensure your flue liner – and the chimney itself – are clean and in good condition. A clogged, damaged or dirty flue can be dangerous, potentially leading to chimney fires or deadly gases – such as carbon monoxide -leaking into your home.
Q: How should I store my fuel?
A: Firewood and coal should be stored in a safe, dry place. If you have the space outside, you can use a woodshed or a sheltered area to store your logs. Your coal or smokeless fuels can be stored outside too, in an enclosed dustbin or something similar. Inside, you can keep small pieces of coal in a bucket near your fireplace, or larger amounts in a basement or separate chest. For more storage tips, read this handy article.
